The Stevedores Jazz Band

John is a gifted and experienced percussionist and vocalist. He arrived at our sunny shores some two (2) years ago with his partner Christine. Since his arrival, he has played with many local bands in Perth.

After Mark Hastings decided to have a break, John was invited to join the Stevedores and he quickly asserted himself as a valued band member.

John has played with many musos some of whom are well known by their association with leading bands such as Acker Bilk, Monty Sunshine, Chris Barber, Kenny Ball and Alex Welsh, to name a few.

One of the highlights of his career was to play at the North Sea Jazz Festival at The Hague in Holland where he was also able to watch and hear some of his favourite performers in between sets. These included Lionel Hampton, Buck Clayton, The Dutch Swing College Band, Ruby Braff, Miles Davis and Warren Vache.

Before retiring, John lived in the lovely Hertfordshire countryside in the U.K. and worked for British Gas as a Salesman but was later promoted to 'Troubleshooter' investigating complaints from customers regarding supply, installations, etc..

Lynn is well known at the Jazz Club of WA and is the widow of the former leader of the band, Bert Nicholls, who unfortunately left us in August, 1999. She has filled his place very competently as the band's banjoist and is also responsible for obtaining a lot of the band's gigs by her tenacity, hard work and perseverance. Lynn also makes a lot of charitable appearances at retirement homes etc., with Len 'Bags' Bagnall.

Ted is a retired Police Officer and has been with the band for approx. ten years. He only started playing with jazz bands seriously since 1991 after returning from a six (6) year posting in Albany and is enjoying every minute of it. He does a lot of the band's promotional work and designs and creates the fliers, business cards etc.. He also suggested, created and maintains this Web Site. (It's marvelous what retirees can do in their spare time particularly when they play golf a couple of times a week as well.) He also has a very tolerant and understanding wife (Maureen) who has put up with him for 40 years.
